Stability, explained

The centre of mass is where the vehicle balances. The centre of pressure is where aerodynamic forces act. Keep the centre of mass ahead of the centre of pressure and every gust pushes the nose back on course; reverse them and the vehicle tumbles. Fins move the centre of pressure backwards, which is why they sit at the tail.
